Why was Ares, Greek God of War, important to the Greeks?

Ares was not so much the god of war as the god of brute force and strength (as opposed to Athena, who was the goddess of techne, or battle strategy). He was largely disliked by the Greeks, and his offspring were typically characterized as brutal thugs, bullies, and ugly giants.
