Why is my Mother in law so RUDE about my childs party?

I am having a birthday party for my daughter. we rented a banquet hall for the day, but my mother in law states her displeasure clearly, that it upsets her we did this. She says because my husband and I cannot afford it. (meaning the banquet hall rental) She determined that herself. Why is she so rude???
