Still having trouble with my desktop background.?

When I right click on a picture to set as my background it acts like it set but still blank? All that it will allow is a color.... will not allow me to make any kind of a selection from the drop menu....My computer acts like the color is blocking the picture from being viewed? I know I sound computer illiterate but I do get frustrated with this one...
