How do you im a guy u like?

so i met this guy on vacation, and hes really cute. I gave him my name for facebook and he added me a few days after i came home. The next day i sent him and email and he wrote on my wall, and we had a whole convo. The next few days i imd him, but he would never im me 1st. The thing is we would talk for a long time (but theres a 7 hr time diffrence) and he would always say cute things and w.e. I dont know if he really wnats to talk to me tho, b/c he never ims me first.....is that desperate- if i always im him first??
